Médoc producers approve timetable for move to Crus Bourgeois classification system

Published:  22 September, 2015

Members of the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the creation of a classification system for their wines.

The move was approved by 75% of members in a secret ballot with a provisional timetable setting a date of 2020 for the introduction of the system.

Details of how the scheme will operate are yet to be ironed out.

The Crus Bourgeois du Médoc are currently chosen by an annual selection process which has just taken place for the 2013 vintage.

Some 251 Crus Bourgeois chateaux were selected, representing combined production of 20 million bottles and approximately 25% of the French region's production.

This was down on last year's official selection when 267 producers were named with combined production of 29 million bottles.

The UK tasting of the 2013 selection takes place at the British Academy in London on Thursday.
