Jago is a new Middle Eastern, European restaurant set to open in London's Shoreditch which can boast former head chef of the award winning Ottolenghi in the kitchen.

The restaurant opens on December 6 and as well as head chef, Louis Solley, has Hugo Thurston, previously general manager of Morito in Exmouth Market as part of its team.

They have come up with the name, Jago, as that is how the area where the restaurant is located,  between Shoreditch High Street and Spitalfields, used to be known. It was made famous in literary circles in the novel, A Child of the Jago, by Arthur Morrison who described it as a "notorious slum full of thieves, prostitutes and gin palaces".

Diners can expect a rather more refined affair with lots of southern European, Middle Eastern and Ashkenazi influences on the menu.

Solley said: "We're quite simply drawing on our skills and our passions to make food we're delighted to eat and proud to serve. We can't wait to start doing so."

The restaurant's press statement said: "The menus will reflect Louis Solley's East-London Jewish roots and reference Spitalfields' history as a home for immigrants. Dishes draw on the culinary heritage of the Ashkenazi diaspora, with its Germanic, Slavic and latterly wider European and American influences, resulting in an offering of modern, global Yiddish fare."

Dishes will include:

  • Grilled cauliflower, endive, almonds and sultanas (£6)
  • Miso marinated onglet (£6)
  • Prawn bisque, bomba rice and parsley oil (£7)
  • Grilled Challah bread with labneh and house compote (£4.50)
  • Harissa marinated mackerel (£6).
  • Grilled apples and sardines, walnuts and rainbow chard (£7.50)
  • Prawn bisque, bomba rice and parsley oil (£7)
  • Braised lamb, dates and carrots, black olive and parsley picada (£14.00)
  • Poached quince, saffron cream and sable biscuit (£6)
  • Stewed octopus, roast fennel and lovage yoghurt (£10.00)
  • Braised lamb, dates and carrots, black olive and parsley picada (£14.00)
  • Pina Colada - rum soaked coconut and lime cake, grilled pineapple and Malibu cream (£6)

The restaurant will offer a number of wines by the glass, starting at £3 for a 125ml glass, and carafes at £12. It will concentrate mainly on wines from southern France and Spain.

Jago is situated at 68-80 Hanbury Street, London E1 5JL.
