Chilean wine producer, Casa Silva, is the eighth winner of the annual Winery of the Year competition held by the Association of Chilean Wine and Wines of Chile.

The Colchagua-based winery was awarded the prize after what the organisers said was a "a detailed analysis of a number of criteria including international awards, consistency, commitment to sustainability, wine tourism supply, export performance, brand image and contribution to research and development".

Mario Pablo Silva, chief executive of Casa Silva, said the award was not just for the winery but for the Colchagua region. He said it would spur the company on to "set even higher goals for the coming years". "That will result in the permanent search for quality wines that express their own land and have their own style characteristics."

The winery was awarded the prize for having embarked on a number of new projects. It has expanded its 100% sustainable vineyards from the cool coast of Paredones to the foothills of the Andes in the Colchagua Valley. It has also expanded towards the south of Chile creating a new appellation: the Southern Region. The organisers said: "Thanks to the work of the Silva family with its Lago Ranco boutique project, Chilean Patagonia now has the southernmost vineyards in the country. The borders have not only expanded in territory, but also in research, as Casa Silva has made the first Carmenère clonal project, which has already demonstrated the existence of at least two genetically distinct clones. Carmenère is not only a signature grape for Chile but also for Casa Silva: a variety that has earned them great recognition, particularly for their wines sourced from the Los Lingues estate in the Andes region of the Colchagua Valley."

They added: "Casa Silva is 100% committed to the Chilean wine industry and contributes to its image through its outstanding tourist facilities that not only enables the company to welcome both national and international visitors, but also to hosts a full range of leisure activities, seminars and meetings to enable the development Wines of Chile."
