January trade tastings fast approaching

Two wine fairs to look ahead to this month include Wine Australia's first Independent Retailer and On-Trade tasting, and the Oregon and Washington State annual trade and press tasting, both on January 31.

The Wine Australia Independent Retailer and On-Trade tasting will feature over 700 wines from across the country. The day will be split into two sections, with the morning dedicated to a private tasting by invitation, followed by an open tasting in the afternoon.

It will also include a joint regional masterclass at 1pm on the wines of the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula, led by winemakers Phil Sexton from Giants Step and Innocent Bystander, and Martin Spedding from Ten Minutes by Tractor. At 4pm wine writer and show judge Anthony Rose will look at the wines of Coonawarra.

Yvonne May, director of Wine Australia UK, Ireland and Europe, said: "With more than 2,300 wine producers creating styles as diverse as the characters behind them, we decided to work towards a channel strategy in this tasting to allow both exhibitors and our visitors more focus. It's going to be a lively day in which we show our artier side in wines."

The Oregon and Washington State annual tasting is claiming to offer the region's "most comprehensive" line up of wines from Oregon and Washington State, along with regular workshops throughout the day.

With over 250 wines from 50 producers available to taste, the generic body aims to provide the opportunity to sample wines across a range of styles and price points.
