The 152nd Hospices de Beaune wine auction has announced record results, with Asian bidders becoming the second most important after those from Europe.

The auction made €5.9 million, with the last record set in 2000. Asia has now overtaken the US for registered bidder numbers and the value of wines (12 %).

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, France's former first lady made a guest appearance, presiding over the president's barrel (350 litres of the Grand Cru Corton Cuvée Charlotte Dumay), which made €270,000 for charity.

The president's barrel was purchased by Maison Bichot on behalf of Ukrainian Igor Iankovskyi. Bruni-Sarkozy and Guy Roux gave their charitable support to the Fondation Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and the Fondation Idée.

Anthony Hanson MW, senior consultant at Christie's, said many records were broken at the 152nd Hospices de Beaune auction. Star cuvées among the red wines included Clos de la Roche Cuvée Georges Kritter at €55,667 (up 94.2% on 2011) and Mazis-Chambertin Cuvée Madeleine Collignon at €38,318 (up 57.7% on 2011).

He added that thanks to a recent generous donation, Echézeaux Cuvée Jean-Luc Bissey, a new Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits, was offered for the first time with each of the six barrels selling for €50,000 (hammer price).

"The superb quality of the 2012 vintage wines, combined with the reduced quantity and the progression of demand for great Burgundy in many countries, not just Asia, contributed to this astonishing, record result", he said.
