Own-label wine sales top £1bn

Published:  27 January, 2012

Own-label wine brands have broken through the £1 billion sales barrier for the first time.

A sales increase of 12% in the year to December 24 took sales of own-labels to £1.059 million, according to Nielsen off-trade data. Volumes rose 5% to 20.1 million cases.

The figures do not take account of exclusive-label merchant brands like Mondelli at Sainsbury's or Tesco's Ogio and Dino, all of which have also recorded big increases.

Nielsen analyst Stewart Blunt said: "Own-labels have benefited from a revamp by some of the retailers. The ranges are more clearly tiered, typically with 'good, better and best'. Also as they are predominantly European, the better exchange rate has no doubt helped, and France, Italy and Spain are to the fore. "Brand owners are feeling a squeeze," added Blunt.
