An operatic offering from De Bortoli

Published:  22 February, 2011

Australian winery De Bortoli has released a new wine to add to its premium Melba range.

The Melba 'Mimi' 2008 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Nebbiolo. It is the third wine in the range and chief winemaker Steve Webber's interpretation of Cabernet blends made in the Claret style.

The wines are named in honour of Australian opera soprano, Dame Nellie Melba with the Melba 'Mimi' being named after the character in Puccini's opera "La Boheme". The Melba range also includes two other wines the Melba Reserve 2007 and the Melba Lucia 2007.

Webber says: "We lost our way for a long time in Australia with Cabernet but I think there is a nice resurgence happening now. The Melba range Cabernet Sauvignon blends are about detail, about sight, and about the perfume in the varietal."
