Thierry's Wine Services has appointed Peter Darbyshire, formerly of Rosemount UK, as its new MD. From 6 June he is responsible for all commercial activities and the co-ordination of the operational side of the company. He will also play an integral part in the strategic team, and in developing new opportunities for Thierry's. The company said that its decision to appoint a new MD was made following a customer audit. The new appointment is designed to reinforce Thierry's position as one of the UK's premier, and most inventive, wine agents. In addition, Thierry Cabanne, who founded the eponymous company in 1971, becomes chairman. He said: We are concentrating more than ever on product development. So the appointment of a managing director of Peter's calibre is a very important step in unifying ourselves as a company and ensuring our continued success.' Darbyshire, who is bilingual and a keen marathon runner, was MD of Rosemount in the UK for three years, before it was merged into Southcorp's UK office. He was also MD of Glenmorangie Plc from 1996-1999 and before that of The Drambuie Liqueur Company Ltd (1993-1996). Thierry's, which is based in Romsey, Hampshire, claims to be the UK's leading importer of French wines. The company is also responsible for helping to build the quality and reputation of private estates in Chile, such as Morand and Canepa. It also has a long-term association with the Argentinian winery Familia Zuccardi. Recently, Thierry's was awarded the London International Wine & Spirits Fair Trade (LIWSF) Marketing Award at the inaugural Drinks Industry Awards 2002. The accolade was awarded to the brand or exhibiting organisation which the judges felt best utilised all forms of media to produce an effective marketing campaign surrounding the LIWSF 2002'. The Drinks Industry Awards 2002 were sponsored by Brintex, organisers of the LIWSF, just-drinks.com and Harpers.
