French authorities predict slump in wine harvest

This year's French wine harvest will be smaller than the previous one due to poor weather and fewer vineyards, according to the national agricultural body Viniflhor.

Production is expected to reach 43.6 million hectolitres, almost 5% less than last year's 46.54 million hectoliters, which was already considered lower than average. Table wines are expected to drop by 8.5% compared to last year, whilst premium Appellation Origine de Controlle (AOC) wines will be down 6.8%, says Viniflor.

Harvesting of grapes began in southern France last month, following several months of poor weather, including a cold snap in late March which has left Viniflhor officials pessimistic.

The closure of some vineyards has also affected production levels, it said.
