Scotch whisky exports grew 8% in 2007

Published:  23 July, 2008

Exports of Scotch whisky products grew by 8% last year, new figures show.

Data from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) showed global demand was at a record level last year with the value of shipments increasing by 14% to hit 2.8 billion.

Some 1,135 million bottles of Scotch whisky were shipped overseas in 2007.

Paul Walsh, the new SWA chairman, said the figures were particularly impressive when set against tough trading conditions.

He added: "Distillers continue to watch market developments carefully but the trends remain positive, with both mature and emerging markets performing well, and Scotch Whisky growing on a sustainable basis.

"Announcements of new capital investment of 400m across the industry last year were a public vote of confidence in Scotch Whisky's prospects and are good news for the wider economy."

Bottled Malt exports rose by 11% to 454m while Bottled Blended Scotch Whisky exports were up 15% to 2.2bn.
