Consumers are unsure that retailers are as environmentally friendly as they claim to be, new figures from BT show.
While 96% of retail companies think operating sustainably is important to their reputation, only 3% of customers think businesses are fully open and honest about their actions, the research found.
One-third think retail businesses exaggerate what they are doing in order to hold consumer trust.
And nearly one-third of retail employees do not believe their company is environmentally and socially responsible.
Some 30% think their employer only acts when forced to do so by outside pressures, while nearly two in five (39%) say their employer is doing too little.
Among retailers, 56% believe they are taking significant steps to improve their impact on the environment and communities, while a further 28% say they are doing everything they can.
