Provence aims to go green

The Provence-Alpes-Ctes d'Azur region (PACA) is offering monetary incentives to producers to help hit its targets for organic production.

PACA aims to have 10% of its vineyards converted to organic viticulture "in the next few years" and has offered 1,000 to each producer who converts.

Alain Baccino, President of the Chambre d'Agriculture du Var and President of the Comit des Ctes de Provence, reported 5% of the total area of the vineyards in Provence is now classified as organic. This ranks the region as first in France in terms of organic surface.

Baccino said environmental concerns would central to the region's development of the region in 2008.
