Debate continues on alcohol and pregnancy

Published:  23 July, 2008

The public health minister added further controversy to the debate on safe drinking levels for pregnant women yesterday.

Dawn Primarolo told a Commons committee that pregnant women should abstain from alcohol altogether.

She claimed that the medical profession was so divided on safe drinking levels, it was best to abstain.

This contradicts the independent NHS advisory organisation, which said it was safe to drink one small glass of wine a day last month.
