New code means wine traced far quicker

Published:  23 July, 2008

An code that identifies items as small as an individual case of wine has been developed allowing producers and customs to track wine much faster between Australia and the UK.

Constellation, Hardy's and Diageo have been involved in producing the "Serial Shipment Container Code" (SSCC), which also provides customs officials with commercial information from the transporting companies.

According to Philip Goodband MW, co-chair of the consortium at Consellation Europe: "The SSCC will greaetly simplify data exchange and allow faster retrieval within the various IT systems en route to the product's final destination."

John Corbet-Milward at the Wine & Spirit Association, one of the project's original sponsors, commented: "During a period of higher security consciousness the SSCC will enable both traders and Customers to keep far closer tabs on product as it moves through the supply chain."
