Gancia's Tuscan venture

Published:  23 July, 2008

After Puglia, Piemonte and Sicily, Lamberto Edoardo and Massimiliano Vallarino Gancia have chosen Tuscany as the next location for their expansion programme.

The destination in this case is Bolgheri, which has proven its vinous and commercial worth, at least for Cabernet and Merlot, if not for native grapes like Sangiovese.

In partnership with the heirs of the Gherardescas, feudal lords here since before Dante's time, and under the label of Castello di Bolgheri, property of the Zileri family, they will launch a pair of wines under the Bolgheri DOC.

The wines will be called Varvara and Castello di Bolgheri. The former is a blend of five French grapes, while the latter is a pure Cabernet (Sauvignon and Franc). They will be barrique-aged for 10 months and 14 months respectively.
