Thresher Group offers employees a franchise

Published:  23 July, 2008

Thresher Group is offering franchises on several hundred' of its 2,000 shops, with its 12,000 staff getting first chance to get involved.
On the back of positive Christmas trading figures, up 15% on December last year, chief executive Roger Whiteside said the move was a strategic step for the business that will enrich our own expertise in the drinks retail sector by mixing it with local knowledge and the flexibility of our franchisees'.

The stores offered are branded either as Threshers or the convenience-focused The Local. Those stores not taken by employees will be offered to non-employees later this year.

Although Thresher ran a pilot project on offering franchises in the late '90s, this is the first large-scale offer it has made.

Whiteside added: Our franchise is a great opportunity; the businesses are already profitable going concerns, and we will provide sales history for applicants so they can see for themselves what they are getting.

We expect to be offering opportunities to the wider market later in the summer.

I want to ensure that our own people have the first option on these stores.'

Thresher Group also announced that all of the 200 stores it recently acquired from the defunct off-licence chain Unwins are trading again and are already generating encouraging results'.
