Borough Wines launches eighth store with in-house gin distillery

Published:  23 May, 2016

Borough Wines & Beers' new Islington store will become the new home to a London-based gin company.

Independent merchant Borough Wines & Beers has opened a new shop which has become the new home of artisan distiller Butler's Gin.

It is the company's seventh shop in the capital and eighth in total, following openings last year on London's Columbia Road and in Hastings, East Sussex.

The unit on the corner of Englefield Road and Essex Road was used briefly by the company as a pop-up shop in December and has now reopened following a refurbishment.

The shop now houses a bottle shop, events space and distillery which is now the new home of the gin brand.

Downstairs is the 'The Vault', a basement supper room created with Ross Butler, founder of Hackney's Butler's Gin.

Butler will move his gin production to an adjoining distillery room, where he will also host workshops and events.

Borough Wines Co-owner Corinna Pyke, said: "The huge basement space is a real bonus and gives us an opportunity to further broaden our events offering and - in working with Ross Butler - diversify this with more spirits-led activities too. The plan is to do the same with beer in the coming months."

In the next few months, a 'nano-brewery' will be installed underneath the shop - where the company plans to produce small-batch beers in partnership with local breweries.

"After receiving such a warm reception from the local community to our pop-up last year - we couldn't wait to reopen a permanent shop on the site," Pyke added.

"It took a little longer than expected, but we didn't want to rush the process and we are delighted with the result. It is a truly striking space that reflects the same accessible spirit as our existing shops, but with a more design-led, modern approach."

As well as the merchant's usual range of wines, craft beers, small-batch spirits and Wine Refills, the new store will also serve Climpsons & Sons coffee and Portuguese tarts.
