Published:  16 March, 2016

The International Wine & Spirit Competition has named Joe Wadsack its Wine Communicator of the Year for 2016 award.

The award, which is sponsored by Vinitaly, is designed to recognise an individual for their exceptional contribution towards increasing consumer awareness of wine.

The judges' assessment is made on the basis of the individual's publishing, journalistic, broadcasting work as well as their social media presence and broader efforts to educate consumers about wine.

Wadsack, who previously won the award in 2005, is the first person to have received it twice.

Wadsack has written for the Sunday Express and Red magazine, and appeared on such TV shows as BBC2's Food & Drink with Tom Kerridge, Great Food Live, Saturday Kitchen, Ladette to Lady and Richard and Judy, for whom he co-authored the Richard and Judy Wine Guide.

Wadsack has also acted as a consultant to numerous businesses across the wine trade and hosted tastings worldwide.

Wadsack was chosen from a shortlist that also included Cathy Huyghe, Will Lyons, Susy Atkins and Sarah-Jane Evans MW.

IWSC panel judge Nicky Forrest said: "Joe has a talent that is almost beyond genius. He harnesses an encyclopaedic wine memory together with an unfettered joy and passion.

"You can't help but be swept along by him. His communicator skills lie in his electric delivery and total immersion in his subject."

Wadsack said: "I am absolutely delighted to receive this prestigious award and to be recognised by the IWSC competition which is highly respected throughout the global drinks industry.

"I am very much looking forward to taking my place once again on such an esteemed roll of honour and to continue to communicate my passion for wine."

The award itself will be officially presented at this year's Vinitaly, which takes place in Verona, from April 10 to 13.

Wadsack will be hosting a food-and-wine masterclass at the fair on Sunday, April 10 at 11:30am..

The Spirit Communicator of the Year, sponsored by Chivas Brothers, will be announced later in the year.
