Sales of sparkling red wine are rocketing, according to leading online retailer Ocado.
Leading the charge is the low-volume artisanal Tenuta di Aljano Setefilari Lambrusco Reggiano, sales of which are up 143% year on year. The wine retails at £11.49.
Also thriving is the Jacob's Creek Sparkling Shiraz, which is has seen 45% sales growth over the same period. It has a £9.99 price point.
The rising sales reflect the success of the sparkling category in general. Ocado reports that sales of Prosecco are also up 20%.
Ocado wine buyer Julian Twaites, commented: "Our customers are very open to trying new styles of wine, often from smaller producers, so it's great to see them enjoying Lambrusco Rosso and other sparkling red wines. For me, the appeal is the freshness and element of fun, delicious served chilled and enjoyed in the sun."
Italy is the principal producer of sparkling reds, but most of its production is currently directed at the domestic market.
