London-based independent wine merchant Borough Wines has announced plans for its first shop outside the capital. Borough Wines, Beers & Books will open in Hastings, East Sussex towards the end of the summer.
The shop will sell books alongside its usual range of wines, beers and spirits, and will also operate as a space for literary events.
Jess Scarratt, previously director of Borough Wines' wholesale arm, will run the drinks side of the business. The literary side will be led by writer and broadcaster Michael Smith.
Books on sale will cover areas such as wine, cooking, art, literature and the seaside. The company also plans a calendar of literary talks, readings and exhibitions to complement regular tastings and wine-related events.
Borough Wines began life as a stall in Borough Market in 2002. It has since added five stores across London, in Hackney, Stoke Newington, Dalston, Kensal Rise and Clerkenwell.
Borough Wines co-owner Corinna Pyke, said: "As our only shop outside the capital, this is a significant step for the company. There is a wonderful community spirit in Hastings and an exciting programme of reinvigoration, being driven by creativity and entrepreneurship. In many ways, this makes it similar to the London neighbourhoods we chose for our previous shops, and it's something we can't wait to be part of. "
