Electric Bear plans to turn on the craft beer taps in Bath

Published:  03 July, 2015

A former transport IT entrepreneur is investing £300,000 to set-up a brewery and taproom in Bath.

Chris Lewis hopes to have Electric Bear Brewing up and running at a 5,000 sq ft industrial unit in the city in early August.

The 15-barrel brewery will initially concentrate on south west England but Lewis has ambitious plans for national distribution across on- and off-trade.

"I'm a passionate beer fan and have been a keen home brewer for years," he said. "It might sound like a cliché but when I sold my business in 2012 I took the opportunity to invest in a sector I'm passionate about.

"The craft beer scene is exploding across the UK with lots of people doing some really interesting things. However, I believe there is still plenty of room to grow and innovate."

Lewis has recruited former St Austell brewery quality controller and Rebel Brewing brewer Guillermo Alvarez (pictured right with Chris Lewis and co-founder Jacqueline Lewis) to oversee the production of five core beers.

Alvarez's grandfather was the main shareholder and distributor of Modelo beers in Mexico and his uncle was a key figure in the development of Corona.

Alvarez said; "It's our ambition to be one of the best breweries in the country, known for great beers and 100% consistency. My style of brewing is to take the classic, well-loved beer styles and give them a modern twist.

"We'll also be brewing a selection of world beers which allows us to have some fun in the brewery and to produce a wider variety of interesting styles."
