Leading members of the wine trade are to come together as "Team Cox" to run the Médoc Marathon in memory of Michael Cox, the former UK head of Wines of Chile, who died earlier this year.

Michael's wife, Lynne, along with twin brother, David, chief executive of the Benevolent, Masters of Wine,Susie Barrie and Peter Richards of the BBC's Saturday Morning Kitchen, have pulled together a team of close friends and colleagues to take part in the marathon and hopefully raise up to £10,000 for the Benevolent and Vintners' Company.

Other members of Team Cox include Eduardo Chadwick, Francisco Baettig, Andres Izquierdo from Viña Errazuriz, Alvaro Arriagada from Wines of Chile, Greg Sherwood MW and Vicky Thompson from Handford Wines and Richard Dare from Avery's Wine Merchants.

The marathon takes place on September 13 around the Bordeaux village of Pauillac and sees the runners weave their way past some of the region's most famous châteaux and towns. Many of the runners wear fancy dress and take part in what is more of a carnival atmosphere than a serious race. This year's theme is "Countries of the world and their carnivals".

The team will be representing Chateau Brane-Cantenac and Chateau Langoa-Barton, who are also hosting the runners for the weekend.

Peter Richards MW said of the initiative: "We want to celebrate Michael's wonderful life, generous nature and fun-loving spirit of adventure in running this fantastic marathon through the great vineyards of Bordeaux. We know Michael would have approved, not just of the fact it's a marathon that features red wine, oysters and a fancy dress theme but also because we're doing it for two great causes very close to his heart.

"We have a fine and plucky team - some Chilean, some English, one South African, all skilled in the art of claret - and we would all dearly love and appreciate any support, in whatever form it may take, so we can achieve something special in memory of a fabulous man".
