The Number One Drinks Company has just launched Karuizawa 1960, Japan's oldest and rarest whisky, at the Tokyo International Bar Show.

The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955, but ceased production in 2000. However, the Number One Drinks company bought the last remaining 364 cases of mature whisky, and has been handling single cask sales of Karuizawa since 2006.

With only 41 bottles of the 53.2% abv single malt available, the bottle and packaging have been designed by an Edinburgh-based studio, using handmade paper, and embellished by an award-winning calligrapher.

Modelled on traditional Japanese puzzle boxes and handmade by a British cabinet maker, the box has been adorned with pieces from the original ex-sherry cask head.

Karuizawa 1960 Cask #5627 is available from the Whisky Exchange at £12,500 per bottle.
