Sales of wine from the Languedoc remain strong, in both AOC and Vin de Pays (VDP) categories, according to the latest figures from the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Languedoc. In the UK, the second largest export market for AOC wines (110,000 hectolitres in 2002), sales were boosted by the large tasting at Lord's on 13 February, and the ongoing Languedoc Cross campaign. At Majestic, sales of 14 wines rose 600% over six weeks, while at Waitrose sales of 6 wines shot up 1,500% in March. The UK remains by far the largest export market for VDP d'Oc, by both value and volume. Value sales rose from E51,731,000 in the first nine months of the 2001 campaign to E67,023,000 in the first nine months of the 2002 campaign. Volume sales rose from 286,925hl to 335,253hl over the same period. Total exports (which represent more than 80% of production) have grown 9.5% by volume and 17.2% by value in 2002/03, while sales in France have risen 18% by volume and remained relatively static in value terms.
