Halfwine.com sees rapid sales growth

Halfwine, the website specialising in selling 37.5cl bottles, has seen sales growth of 37% in the first quarter of 2012.

The site has grown its portfolio to include a range of wines from Alsace, including Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, from the vineyards of Bott Frères and Domaine Weinbach in Haut-Rhin.

In addition to being available individually, halfwine.com also offer a six-bottle mixed Alsace case for £75.90 + delivery (for orders under 12 bottles).

"Halfwine.com buyers have been looking to grow the white wines in the portfolio; while it is fair to say that Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are always popular choices, we think that these wines from Alsace will provide the necessary variety for those that want it," said Kevin Dilton-Hill, founder of halfwine.com.

The new wines range in price from £7.30 for Bott Frères 2010 Riesling to £18.50 for Domaine Weinbach 2009, Gewurztraminer Altenbourg.

The site was founded in October 2011, after Dilton-Hill, who has been buying half bottles for more than 20 years, identified a gap in the market.

He said market research has found many consumers admitted to throwing away or cooking with good wine or even drinking the rest of the bottle a while later because they did not want it to go to waste.

The range comprises old and new world Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Champagne, sparkling and dessert wine.
