The Big Wine Festival wants to attract "average customers" and families to its June event, in an effort to broaden the appeal beyond "crusty wine buffs".

The consumer event will aim to bring food and culture into the wine mix, said founder Olivia Ocana, speaking to ex-Sky presenter Chris Roberts at Harpers and WineOption's consumer forum.

Video report by Chris Roberts, former Sky News broadcaster and chief executive of InVision Communication.

"People will be able to taste wines, and learn a little, or a lot, in what won't be an initimidating environment," she said.

As the event takes place from June 7 to 10, just after the Diamond Jubilee, when many schools will be closed, Ocana is actively encouraging families to attend, and bring their children.

The event, which Ocana claims will be the biggest consumer event in 2012 outside of the Olympics, will offer entertainment in the form of a comedy club, and yet to be annouced artists.

See Harpers Friday December 16 issue for full details of the consumer forum.
