Berrys committed to wine label improvements

Berry Bros & Rudd has explained why it has not signed up to a trade pledge to make drinks labels contain clear unit content, NHS guidelines and a warning about drinking when pregnant.

The wine merchant was among a number of suppliers which has thrown its weight behind the public health responsibility deal with government, which contains seven separate pledges to help make improvements to the UK's drinking culture.

Along with Coe Vintners, BBR abstained from the labelling pledge. But Alun Griffiths MW, BBR's wine director, said the company was committed to more detailed labelling wherever possible.

He said: "We deal with so many small growers from all over the place, and it's a cost to them. So we prefer to do it on our own Berrys' Selection wines, and we're trying to go our own way in terms of putting ingredient lists on as well.

"It's a work in progress. As we change vintages or bring in new suppliers we're putting pregnancy images on the back labels and unit labelling as well."
