Simon Thorpe MW is quitting Constellation Europe to become managing director of Australian fine wine importer Negociants UK.

In a surprise move Thorpe is leaving his job at the helm of wine development at Constellation Europe to take up the post with the New World wine specialist on December 14.

Thorpe said: 'I'm absolutely delighted to be joining Negociants UK. It is a business that represents wineries which encapsulate all that is great about the Australian wine industry. Innovative, diverse, bold, and, above all, quality driven, the breadth and excellence of the portfolio of wineries and brands is what has brought me to work with this fantastic family owned business."

Negociants' international director Brenton Fry said: "This appointment will add increased depth and vision to our sales and marketing team and enable us to maximise our portfolio across all channels. His experience will drive Negociants UK business forward, onwards and upwards. We are very much looking forward to having Simon on board."

Negociants UK, which is the export arm of the Yalumba family estate, has been without a managing director since February. The company has offices in the UK, the US and New Zealand.

Thorpe has previously worked as purchasing director at Western Wines and in the wine buying team at Waitrose.
