Wine Australia plans to launch a new scholarship offering twelve industry members a chance to win a trip to Australia and participate in a series of educational workshops.

The "Landmark" scholarship is likely to launch in November with five of the 12 scholarship places earmarked for the UK and Ireland. The remaining seven places will be offered worldwide. The trip would take place in June 2009.

Kirsten Moore, UK market manager, Wine Australia told Harpers: "It is not confirmed yet but we hope to have a Len Evans-type tutorial offering 12 members of the trade a trip to Australia with extensive workshops and a chance to be tutored by top Australian winemakers."

Potential candidates will apply to Wine Australia and it is hoped it will attract all members of the trade including Master of Wine students and journalists.

Landmark Australia is the one of the four categories created by Wine Australia's Directions 2025 strategy, and focuses on the country's finest wines. However Moore reiterated its Regional Hero category would continue to be its focus in the UK. It will roll out its Regional Heroes programme to independent retailers and the on-trade after a pilot training scheme in 2007/08. It aims to train more than 300 staff in the next twelve months as well as running half-day workshops for staff at Thresher, Oddbins and Selfridges.
