Malcolm Ball, the Vinopolis chief executive, has joined Wellington Market Company Plc.
Ball's four-and-a-half-year stint with Vinopolis as chief executive saw the company move from an annual loss-making position of 1m to profits of 1.1m.
Wellington Market Company Plc and its main operating subsidiary, Town and Country Markets, is the UK's largest, private sector owner and operator of retail markets and has operations across 35 sites.
Ball said: "It's both an exciting and challenging time for markets. The rising cost of living and effects of the credit crunch are making consumers seek out a better deal.
"This said, we're not looking to merely compete on price - there's much more to markets than that. Today's shoppers are far more discerning and issues surrounding food miles, packaging and supporting local, ethical and environmentally-sound producers are moving to the fore."
