The UK was the most important important export market for Spanish wines in terms of value in 2007.
Wines from quality designated regions (D.O's) were the most important category with close to 140 million worth of wine being shipped to the UK, according to Federacin Espaola del Vino. This represents an increase of 15.9% increase.
Mara Jos Sevilla, director of Wines from Spain, said: "The UK consumer is embracing our wines wholeheartedly from the elegant whites of Ras Baixas, Valdeorras and Rueda to the wonderful reds of Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Priorat and Jumilla to name but a handful - and is prepared to trade up, experimenting in different styles from a wide selection of regions.
"Spain is going from strength to strength and we are delighted that the U.K. is the number one market for Spanish wines in the world."
