Tesco moves on new US depot

Published:  23 July, 2008

US: Tesco is close to finalising the acquisition of a second US depot, which would facilitate the opening of a further 1,000 Fresh & Easy convenience stores.

Tim Mason, Fresh & Easy chief executive, told a news conference that the new supply centre could ramp up annual sales to $10 billion (4.8 billion) per annum.

Tesco's recent US venture has seen 13 Fresh & Easy stores opened since November 8 and there are plans afoot to open 200 stores by February 2009.

Mr Mason told journalists "no one should be more than a mile from a Fresh & Easy," reports the Telegraph.

The company sees its long-term expansion plans developing on the US west coast with stores running from San Diego up to Seattle, he added.

Following the launch of Fresh & Easy in the US last month, the company said each store would represent a smaller option than a typical domestic supermarket at roughly 10,000 square feet and employing between 20 and 30 staff members.

Tesco currently operates in 12 overseas markets - including the US - with over 430,000 employees worldwide and more than half of the company's retailing space overseas.
