UK wine drinkers are the most frequent consumers on the world export market, with more than 80% drinking wine more than once a week.
According to latest research by Wine Intelligence, which aims to gives importers an insight into potential markets, the UK, US, and Australia are the most promising volume markets, with 55% of consumers drinking two to five times a week.
One in five Australians drink every day. But wine is far less frequently consumed in Canada, Japan and Finland, where less than one-third drink twice a week or more.
The figures also show there is a strong on-trade wine drinking culture in the UK, as well as Japan, Australia, Ireland and Denmark: more than 90% of regular wine drinkers in these countries consume wine in a pub, bar or restaurant.
Richard Halstead, director of Wine Intelligence, expressed surprise that only 66% of German wine drinkers ever bought wine in an on-trade premise. He said: "There are clearly differences but it's amazing how similar behaviour is between these export exports."
