Published:  23 July, 2008

Sommeliers for Spain' is a new on-trade initiative launched by Wines from Spain. The generic body has formed an alliance with The Academy of Food and Wine, and will hold a series of tastings for sommeliers, focusing on the best from Spain'.

The first event was held at Tom Aikens restaurant in London, with two further tastings going ahead by Christmas. Sommeliers from Spain will start out in London, and will be taken round the UK next year.

Peter McCombie MW has the task of selecting wines for each event, which will vary from drop-in' affairs, to tutored tastings. Chairman of the project is Bruno Murciano, head sommelier at The Ritz, who said: I look forward to sharing my passion for Spanish wines with my fellow sommeliers, and to some great wines and lively debate.'

And Wines from Spain director Maria Jos Sevilla added: Sommeliers are the gatekeepers to a public which enjoys fine food and wine. By educating and inspiring sommeliers, we hope to bring Spanish wines more to the forefront of the UK dining scene.'
