Domaine des Sénons has announced the plantation of the first three hectares at Saint-Martin-du-Tertre.
Frédéric Duponchel, Bernard Raveneau and Florian Ruscon, the three partners of Domaine des Sénons, have planted two hectares of Chardonnay and one hectare of Pinot Noir on the plots.
The plantations represent the resurrection of an old vineyard, which Domaine des Sénons said is “well known since ancient times and praised in texts from the 16th and 17th centuries”.
“Following the triple effect of the emergence of the railway network, the phylloxera crisis and the First World War, this vineyard totally disappeared during the first quarter of the 20th century,” it said.
It added that “all the geological and chemical tests conducted on the Domaine des Sénons plots have confirmed the high quality of the sub-soil: a calcareous bedrock, with a clay topsoil, diffused by a huge quantity of flint. This rare mix results in a unique and highly promising terroir”.
The wines will be certified with a Protected Designation of Origin, from Yonne.
Domaine des Sénons said it plans to plant three to four hectares each year, on the hills of three villages: Saint-Martin-du-Tertre, Paron and Rosoy.
An environmentally friendly and gravity fed winery will also be built in the village of Paron while medieval chalk caves will be used for the maturation and storage of the wines.
