Berkmann Wine Cellars brings Canevel to the UK

Published:  10 May, 2018

Berkmann Wine Cellars has signed a deal as the exclusive UK distributor of Canevel.

The deal, which marks the Prosecco brand’s UK debut, includes Berkmann representing Casa Canevel Prosecco DOC Extra Dry, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG and Vigneto del Faè Spumante Dosaggio Zero Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG across the on and off-trade with immediate effect.

The launch of Canevel, which Masi Agricola of Valpolicella acquired a 60% stake in two years ago, came at a “crucial time” time for Prosecco in the UK market, said Masi.

Through integrating the entire production chain, focussing on single cru vineyards and through engaging zero dosage for the Faè vineyard, the producer said it hoped to help shape the potential for Prosecco in the premium wine category.

“Prosecco’s name is very strong, certainly stronger than any individual brand with consumers often asking for ‘a glass of Prosecco’, said marketing director Raffaele Boscaini.

By focussing on individual high quality terroirs of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and Asolo, and by integrating the whole production chain, Prosecco could be taken seriously as a high-quality wine of terroir with characteristics of each individual vineyard brought out, he added.

Alex Hunt MW of Berkmann, said: “Canevel differentiates itself clearly from the sea of mass-market Prosecco not only through sheer quality, but also by presenting a range of specific terroir expressions down to single cru level, with the existence of a zero-dosage wine in the line-up a testament to Canevel’s confidence in the raw material.”

Founded in 1979, the family-run Canevel estate comprises 26 hectares, of which 15 hectares are planted to grapes and produces premium sparkling wines, in particular those of Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, with a turnover of approximately 4.5 million Euros and 850,000 bottles.
