The new owner of Unwins, DM Private Equity, has sent a morale-boosting letter to all staff, in a bid to improve the multiple specialist's fortunes.
The letter, from chairman Phillip Cook, stresses the need for a professional approach', and allegedly warns that those who do not behave in this way should seek employment elsewhere'.
Sales and marketing director Ian McLernon refused to comment on the issues raised in the letter, but did say that it was part of our traditional communications plans, and was keeping our employees informed of what's happening in the business'.
Reaction to the letter from Unwins managers was mixed. One manager, who did not want to be identified, told Harpers: I thought that the tone of the letter was strict and intimidating. The blame always goes on to the managers, and we're not very happy about it. We want the company to get better, but most of the shops haven't been done up for a few years.'
Other managers were more supportive. Comments included:
I can see their point of view. I'm a hard worker, so I don't have anything to worry about.'
It's a positive thing. It shows the company is talking to us.'
It's a good thing. There was no discipline before. People were turning up for work in tracksuits and trainers.'
