Three become PIG

Published:  23 July, 2008

Three specialist importers have combined forces for two trade tastings in September.

The PIG' tasting will feature new releases from Portugal, Italy and Greece, with a special focus on each country's unique native grape varieties.

Portugal will be represented by Raymond Reynolds Ltd, Italy by Winetraders (UK) Ltd and Greece by Eclectic Wines. There will be a northern tasting on Monday 12 September at the Cedar Court Hotel at junction 24 of the M62, and the London tasting will take place on Wednesday 14 September at Abbaye on Old Brompton Road. Both events will run from 11am to 4.30pm.

Danny Cameron of Raymond Reynolds - who was also a driving force behind this year's Specialist Importers Trade Tasting (SITT) and last years i5 tasting (which featured five specialist importers) - said the PIG tasting was needed to showcase the indigenous varieties from three very interesting wine-producing countries, all under one roof.

It's not a replacement for i5, which has basically been superseded by SITT, which all five members of i5 have now joined. This tasting has a different emphasis.'

He added that wines made from the indigenous grapes of Italy, Portugal and Greece are becoming more and more important to specialist independents as they can provide a real USP'.
