Legendary South African winemaker and producer, Charles Back, received the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Wine Challenge awards dinner last night in London.
Charles Back
Back, who is a third generation owner of South Africa's Fairview winery, is not only hugely respected in his home country, but has become one of the most well-known winemakers around the world for the work he has done in research and analysis, most noticeably in Chile and Argentina.
The IWC award was also given to recognise his commitment to social development within previously disadvantaged communities affiliated with the South African wine industry plus the work he has done to promote Fairtrade in South Africa and around the world.
In 1997, for example, he initiated the Fairvalley Workers Association that provides land ownership to Fairview workers and their families.
Charles Metcalfe, co chairman of the IWC, said of his award; "Charles Back has been a huge influence on the wine industry in South Africa and around the world. Not only does he consistently produce award-winning wines, his commitment to supporting his local community is laudable. He is a true star of the trade."
