New Zealand scholarship up for grabs for UK wine professionals

Published:  07 July, 2014

UK wine professionals with a hankering for the New Zealand way of life could see their dreams come true by winning a scholarship to Marlborough.

Wine Marlborough and the NZ-UK Link Foundation have opened applications for the 2014/2015 programme.

The scholarship started in 2009 when Wine Marlborough and the NZ-UK Link Foundation, together with the late John Avery MW, established a scholarship to fund a UK wine trade professional to travel to New Zealand to experience the region. The idea is to boost the recipient's wine knowledge and personal development as a potential leader in the wine industry.

Once there the recipient will have the opportunity to study viticultural and winemaking practices, learn about innovation and styles produced in the region as well as meeting local winemakers.

Kat Wiggins, the 2012 recipient of the scholarship, said: "The scholarship gave me an amazing insight into Marlborough, its geography, its people and its wines. Covering all aspects, from the artisan producers to the larger companies, from the conventional to the biodynamic, I left with far more understanding, with new friends and with a true love for the region."

Marlborough makes 75% of New Zealand's wine and contributes approximately NZ$1bn of New Zealand's $1.3bn wine exports.

Applicants must have at least five years' experience in the wine trade and be a UK citizen.
