Doug Lehmann, one of the charismatic figures in the Australian wine trade, has died over the weekend aged 62.

Lehman, who was a former managing director of his father's wine business, Peter Lehmann Wines, was a well-known and loved personality in the UK wine trade and was responsible for helping to expand the company's profile around the world.

Although the Hess Group has held a majority stake in the business since 2003, Lehmann was still a central figure in the company until his retirement in 2010. Even then he was still part of its thinking in his role as non-executive deputy chairman.

Lehmann's death, follows a year and one day after his father died last year.

Jeff Bond chief executive ofPeter Lehmann Wines, said:

"It's very sad news, and comes just a day after the anniversary of Peter's passing."

He added: " Doug was a team man, and always said it was people that make great wines. With that, he always led by example. He upheld the legacy of his father, which remains in every aspect of the company today, and will continue to be so."

He told Australian media that the values laid down by both Peter and Doug would remain at the heart of the company going forward. "That's one of the lasting legacies that Peter and Doug have put in place and those values will continue on," Bond told the Financial Review.

Lehmann had been managing director of the business from 1993 to 2010 and was also deputy chairman. Prior to that he had been the winery's main winemaker from 1997 for 14 years.

Doug, who was 62, is survived by his wife Ingrid and children Harry, Annika and Michael
