Worldwide Champagne exports fell 1.5% in 2913, selling 304 million bottles worldwide.

December brought the sparkling wine a sales surge, up 8% on the previous December and, at 42 million bottles, representing 15% of the year's total.

Champagne's home market saw sales dip by 2.3% down to 167 million bottles, and within the EU shipments fell by 3.4% to 74 million bottles.

Champagne turned over 4.3 billion euros worth of sales - making 2013 the fifth best year to date.

Shipment volumes were in line with the Champenois' expectations for the 2013 harvest.

According to figures from the Champagne Bureau, Champagne's top export markets in 2013 beat the previous year's record, accounting for 20% of sales by volume and 35% of turnover.

In the UK over Christmas, sparkling wine was a major success story for retailers, but Prosecco and not Champagne was credited with providing retailers with the biggest sales uplift.
