Giles Fallowfield travels back 100 years with Lanson's vintage Champagne

Lanson head winemaker Jean-Paul Gandon with his heir apparent Hervé Danton were in London last week for a dinner at Vintners Halls to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of vintage Champagne at the house. Lanson's first vintage Champagne was produced in 1904 and in a nice bit of symmetry it was the first opportunity to taste the newly released 2004 Lanson vintage, another good example of the large, forward and attractive '04 vintage showing biscuity complexity and a long finish.

"England has quite a lot of quite good wines, but few have thought through what their mojo is," says Trevor Clough, co-founder with husband, business partner, and "breadwinner" (a computer speech recognition specialist), Jason Humphries, of Digby Fine English sparkling wines. A former corporate strategist advising Fortune 500 firms, the American/Englishman, born north of Boston and raised in Germany, cites California as inspiration to quit his job to invest time in wine. "I want a tiny part of Napa's fairy dust to rub-off on England," he says.

Sebastian Warnier, head of viticulture in Chile for Santa Rita Estates, stands atop a hill that overlooks a fair part of the almost 600ha of vines planted by the group in Pumanque, a valley about 50km from Apalta, in Colchagua, just behind the coastal range, a mere 23km from the Pacific, whose cooling fogs and winds can enter through the wind-gap created by the mouth of the Nilahue River.
