PORTUGUESE EXHIBITION HAILED A SUCCESS

Portugal's first international wine exhibition, which focused on Port, table wine and cork, has been hailed a success. Held in Oporto in June, the exhibition attracted around 1,200 foreign visitors. Paulo Amorim of Quinta do Aveleda, president of ANCEVE (the Portuguese Wine & Spirit Association), noted that he had not seen visitors of this calibre in Portugal in 20 years. Journalist Luzia Schrampf from Austria found the event valuable to speak in depth with winemakers and to get an impression of current industry trends. UK importer Roger Cheeseworth of Direct Cellar Marketing agreed, adding that he found the event more useful for sourcing wines than an ICEP-sponsored tour. The exhibition will move to Brazil in 2003 and return to Oporto in 2004.
