One of Australia's oldest family owned wineries, Angove Family Winemakers, has acquired a 12.15 hectare vineyard in McLaren Vale as it seeks to expand its portfolio to include super premium Shiraz varietals.

The purchase of the boutique vineyard, which Angove says boasts 80 year old vines on rich alluvial soils, means the winery now has its own secured fruit supply in the region. Angove, which already owns vineyards in the Nanya and Anchorage regions, has been sourcing fruit from McLaren Vale for around seven years, primarily for its Vineyard Select Range.

John Angove, managing director at Angove, commented: "The vineyard is planted with Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a small patch of Grenache which holds enormous potential for a small parcel of premium wine.

"The Nanya vineyard remains a key source of fruit for us and will continue to be, but we want to develop a portfolio that reflects the diversity and flavours of Australia's wine regions. We are a growing company and we're always on the lookout for the right opportunity to expand our offering further."

The 122 year old company exports to more than 30 countries worldwide.
