Earliest French harvest on record begins

Published:  23 July, 2008

FRANCE: The harvest in the Champagne region is already under way - one of the earliest French grape harvests on record.

Despite one of the coldest summers in recent years, a mild winter and unusually warm spring has caused grapes to ripen two to three weeks ahead of schedule.

However, yields are expected to be down between 5-6%.

Grape harvesting has already begun in the Languedoc, as it has in Provence, while it is likely to start in the Rhne and in Beaujolais during the next day or two.

As ever, despite the atypical weather in 2007, many producers have predicted a good, or in some cases, excellent vintage.
