SOUTH AFRICA: Distell has announced revenue growth of 18.4%, and a sales volume increase of 14.4%.
For the 12-month period to June 30, trading income went up by 25%, to R1.1 billion (75m), a result attributed to "better performance from company assets", according to MD Jan Scannell.
In the South African market, sales volumes increased by 15.6%, with Scannell claiming that brands such as Savanna and Hunter's ciders had done exceptionally well.
"Newly affluent black middle-class consumers have grown dramatically in number and spending power," he said, "with all the beverage producers vying for their disposable income, which has resulted in intensified competition."
International business contributed 18% of total revenue, with export volumes growing by 9.8%, with spirit volumes up by 23.2%.
Scannell said that Distell had performed better than the South African wine industry in foreign markets, growing its share of bottled wine exports. Earnings from wine exports had also "significantly increased".
