EU scheme to fast track through custom controls

Published:  23 July, 2008

New European Union scheme aims to simplify exporting and importing for businesses working within the 27 member states.

By applying for Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status, businesses with international ties will benefit from simplied procedures when importing and exporting goods.

Becoming an AEO could also have the potential for goods to be fast-tracked through customs controls.

The scheme is open to businesses working in international supply chains that carry out customs-related activity in the EU.

Applications can now be submitted but due to an ongoing consultation period, the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will not issue the first certificates until mid March 2008.
