Leading specialist UK wine merchant Hallgarten & Novum Wines has become Harpers Wine & Spirit’s latest Sustainability Partner.
Part of the Harpers Sustainability Charter, Sustainability Partners are companies working closely with Harpers to forward the debate on sustainability and highlight issues.
The merchant has been committed to sustainable targets for a significant period of time, achieving ISO 14001 certification in 2018 and Corporate Carbon Neutral status in 2023.
It continues to look for year-on-year environmental footprint improvements, committing to a strategic target of decreasing Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2032 and at least 90% by 2050.
This will involve environmental measures across several areas, including annual reductions in energy consumption, achieved through encouraging sustainable commuting; working from home; cutting down on printing and electricity; and investing in carbon offsetting projects.
Hallgarten is also aiming to increase the volume of recycled office waste year-on-year; work with upstream logistics partners to cut emissions (sea freight accounts for 58% of Hallgarten’s carbon footprint); and continue to gather detailed data from itself and partners it works with.
The merchant also publishes an updated ‘Eco Standard’ for its suppliers each year, which measures them against the four pillars of Environment, Energy Management, Water & Waste Management and Social Responsibility.
There are now six Harpers Sustainability Partners in total. The other five are Alliance Wine, Bodega Argento, Gonzalez Byass, Hatch Mansfield and Lanchester Wines.
Harpers’ Charter aims to build a network of ‘sustainably minded businesses’, forming part of its campaign to drive sustainability across the trade by sharing and promoting best practice.
Signatories to the charter are asked to track their progress across various pathways towards greater sustainability. Hallgarten tracks its carbon footprint, staff welfare & progression, packaging, community focused activities, supply chain partners and drinks portfolio.
