Wines of Hungary brings Furmint February to the UK

Published:  12 December, 2018

Wines of Hungary has announced it will be bringing Furmint February to the UK in 2019.

Furmint February, launched 10 years ago to celebrate Hungry’s flagship grape, will kick off 30 January 2019 with a media, trade and members tasting of more than 60 Furmint wines from 20 different producers.

This will be followed by importers and retailers putting Furmint in the spotlight throughout February with activities comprising tastings, dinners and special offers, all designed to help wine lovers in the UK taste and learn more about the grape variety.

With the grape variety gaining more and more recognition in the UK, now was the right time to shine a light on it, said Wines of Hungary.

“We’re looking forward to getting UK based wine drinkers excited about the wide range of styles it can produce. We’re encouraging venues and retailers to join us in promoting Furmint February at their outlets, and we will be rewarding the best performing venue for their promotion with a trip to Tokaj in 2019,” said Lilla O’Connor, Wines of Hungary UK.

An exciting thing about Furmint was its versatility, added Caroline Gilby MW.

“It has some similarities to Riesling - able to go from bone-dry, crisp and vibrant; to intensely sweet, always with its hallmark steely acidity. At the same time, it has a touch of Chardonnay’s nature about it – capable of fine sparkling wines and able to respond well to oak and malolactic fermentation to give layered complex, almost Burgundian wines,” she said.
